Proposal to double Indian nurse executives in the UK by 2027

The announcement coincided with a milestone reported by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC): a record 67,576 Indian nurses are now on the register.

The British Indian Nurses Association (BINA) has pledged to double the number of Indian-origin nurses in executive roles across the UK healthcare system by 2027. This ambitious goal, aimed at challenging systemic inequality in healthcare leadership, was unveiled at BINA's third annual conference in Leicester recently. 

The announcement coincided with a milestone reported by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC): a record 67,576 Indian nurses are now on the register, representing 8 percent of the UK’s total nursing and midwifery workforce.

Marimouttou Coumarassamy, BINA’s founder and chair, highlighted the significant growth of the Indian nursing community in the UK but noted persistent challenges. F“Our contributions to the NHS and improving the health of our adopted nation are invaluable, but sustaining this impact requires concerted action,” he said.

Despite the high numbers, only six Indian-origin nurses currently hold chief nurse positions in the NHS, a disparity Coumarassamy attributed to a “glass ceiling and systemic inequality in the leadership pipeline.”

To address this, BINA announced a partnership with recruitment firm Hunter Healthcare to develop initiatives for career advancement. A new senior nurses network will focus on mentorship and tailored programmes to prepare members for senior roles. “Our goal is to double Indian-origin representation at the executive level by 2027. This is a goal we must achieve,” Coumarassamy declared.

Coumarassamy also celebrated the recent appointment of Bejoy Sebastian as the first Indian-origin president of the Royal College of Nursing. “Congratulations to Bejoy Sebastian, who has shattered barriers and punched through the thickest glass ceiling with his compassion and leadership style,” he said.
