Authorities have reported that a 23-year-old Indian-American student at Purdue University, who was discovered deceased in a nature preserve in Indiana this week, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Sameer Kamath, a U.S. citizen, was discovered deceased in the woods on February 5 at around 5 p.m. local time in NICHES Land Trust - Crow's Grove located in Williamsport, Indiana.
Justin Brummett, Coroner at the Warren County Coroner's Office, in a statement revealed that a forensic autopsy was conducted on Kamath on February 6 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
The statement from the coroner's office indicated that the preliminary cause of death for Kamath is a "gunshot wound of the head," and it has been determined to be a case of "suicide." A toxicology report is currently pending.
The Purdue Exponent identified Kamath as a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering. He "received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and came to Purdue in the summer of 2021," the report added. Kamath was expected to graduate from the doctoral program in 2025.
Kamath's death adds to a series of unfortunate incidents involving students of Indian origin and those from India in the US.
