Raj Chetty to receive honorary degree from Wesleyan University

in 2009, Chetty became of the youngest tenured professors in Harvard's history

Indian American economist Raj Chetty was named an honorary degree recipient by Wesleyan University. He will be awarded the degree at the university’s192nd commencement ceremony on May 26.

Currently, the William A. Ackman Professor of Public Economics at Harvard University, Chetty also serves as the director of Opportunity Insights, a university-affiliated non-profit that employs "big data" to determine how to improve the prospects of success for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. 

Born in New Delhi, India, Chetty moved to the United States in 1988. In 2003, he earned his PhD at 23 from Harvard University and went on to become one of the youngest tenured professors in Harvard's history. He held positions at UC-Berkeley and Stanford University, where he became known for his research methodologies. 

Chetty’s work has garnered citations in scholarly journals, media organizations, and policy deliberations both domestically and internationally. He has been recognized with awards such as the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, the 2019 John Kenneth Galbraith fellowship, and the John Bates Clark medal. 

His recent projects at the nonprofit include studies on ‘Racial Disparities in Income Mobility’, ‘The Social Capital Atlas’, and the ‘COVID-19 Economic Tracker’. His research uses data based insights to address socio-economic disparities and to help design more effective government policies.

Alongside Chetty, the other two honorary degree recipients included Imani Perry,  an award-winning author and professor of African and African American Studies, and Michael Greenberg, a Wesleyan alumnus and neuroscientist. Wesleyan president Michael S Roth said, “At a time when the Academy is under fire, the inspiring achievements of these honourees shows just how powerful and beneficial academic work at the highest level can be.”
