Indian American cardiologist Rajesh Mohan lost his bid to represent New Jersey's 3rd congressional district, with Assemblyman Herb Conaway emerging victorious.
The Associated Press called the race for Conaway on Nov. 6 after technical issues delayed results in Burlington County.
Mohan, a Republican, faced an uphill battle in a district heavily redrawn in favor of Democrats. Despite leading in Monmouth County, Mohan trailed Conaway 52.9 percent to 45 percent overall as of 5 a.m. on Nov. 6.
Mohan campaigned on a platform focused on healthcare reform, fiscal responsibility, and support for small businesses.
Following the election, the “Samosa Caucus”—an informal group of Indian-origin Americans in Congress—increased its membership to six. The caucus may grow to seven members if Democratic candidate Amish Shah, who is currently leading in Arizona’s District 1, wins his race.
The term "Samosa Caucus" was coined by Illinois Representative Raja Krishnamoorthy in 2018 to represent the growing presence of Indian-Americans in the U.S. Congress.
Meanwhile, in Texas’s 3rd Congressional District, Sandeep Srivastava lost to Republican incumbent Keith Self. With 99 percent of the vote reporting, Srivastava secured 37.4 percent of the vote, while Self retained his seat with 62.6 percent. Srivastava, a immigrant and entrepreneur, campaigned on issues including economic opportunity and healthcare reform but could not overcome the strong Republican presence in the district.
