Rajiv Vinnakota to receive Rutgers University honorary degree

He will receive the honor on May 18, 2025 at the University's 259th anniversary commencement.

Rutgers University will honor Rajiv Vinnakota, a national leader in civic engagement and education, with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at its 259th commencement ceremony. 

Vinnakota, president of the Institute for Citizens & Scholars, a New Jersey-based non profit aimed at strengthening America’s democracy, is recognized nationally for his work in civic learning and youth leadership development.

Prior to leading the Institute for Citizens & Scholars, he served as executive vice president of the Aspen Institute, where he launched the youth and engagement programs division. He also co-founded the SEED Foundation, the nation's first network of public, college-preparatory boarding schools for underserved children.

Vinnakota currently co-chairs the Civics and Civic Engagement Taskforce for the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and contributes to multiple civic initiatives nationwide. He is also a frequent commentator on civic learning and Gen Z engagement.

A son of Indian immigrants, Vinnakota grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where he received the Woodrow Wilson Award.

“We look forward to Commencement Week, when we will welcome our distinguished commencement speakers and honorary degree recipients and salute the Class of 2025,” said University president Jonathan Holloway. 

The university will also confer honorary degrees on Laurie Patton, president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Peter Seligmann, a conservation leader and Rutgers alumnus, who will deliver the keynote address
