Movies are all about entertainment, entertainment, entertainment-yet, there are times when the filmmakers and actors have together turned a social argument over, played: the devils advocated and asked us if justice was truly given….
When Raj Kundra decided to wear a mask in public, people laughed at first, then got curious but no one really thought that he was preparing for a face off with the media that painted him in the black over the adult film case that was levied upon him. He decided to make a film on his woes and sufferings. Who is the press to condemn anyone, when they don’t have any proof-he asks through his film UT 69. The film also talks about his life as an under trial in jail. The relationships that got made and the learnings from it, will be with him for a lifetime- says the producer turned actor.
The Jessica Lal case was a judicial circus that had media from across the globe pointing fingers at the hideous acquittal of the murders due to lack of evidence, by the Indian court. With eye witnesses going hostile, evidence getting tampered and so an, the sheer brutality of it had all ingredients that could make for a film script.
Two actresses-Vidya Balan and Rani Mukerji were both the talk of the town when they agreed to do this film. The film in many ways ensured that Manu Sharma (the murderer) didn’t get to take his paroles for granted like he did prior to the release of the film. Post the release of the film, the subject which was always a national, political topic was suddenly a dinner table conversation too. With such awareness, the likes of Manu Sharma was never let out Scott free.
There are still too many unanswered questions because Arushi Talwar’s murder case remains unresolved. However, it didn’t stop Vishal Bharadwaj and Meghana Gulzar from turning this horrific dual-murder case into a motion picture. Even today, the answers are not fully in place. But Bharadwaj and Gulzar did try their best to question some of the court and police’s report while making the film-Talvar.
The film stars Kankana Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kahi as the couple whose teenage daughter was brutally killed in the security of their own house.
Shahid the bloated film which brought Rajkummar Rao the acclaim and recognition that was long overdue, was directed by Hansal Mehta. Taking up the issue of activist and lawyer Shahid Azmi was, in itself, a victory. The fin brought out the cruelty meted out on a man who simply tried to stand up for people who were convicted seemingly due to religious bias instead of having any evidences against them.
Soon after Shahid, Rao and Mehta announced Omerta. The film which was about the plotting and murder of journalist Daniel Pearl, exposed state-sponsored terrorism and how it manipulates young minds into be believing a sordid interpretation of Jihad.
Unfortunately the roar of anticipation amongst the audience post Shahid was so deafening that this ‘vow of silence could not keep up at the box office. But then film sure did make a difference in more ways than one. Not c it only did it give the regular passerby a chance to know just how a bespectacled boy next door could be a vicious criminal plotting mass murders and more. It simultaneously spoke about how one should not judge based on looks and religion
