The Indian box office experienced a mixed performance in 2024, with regional films outpacing Bollywood in collections and audience engagement.
According to Ormax Box Office Report Bollywood saw its gross collections drop by 13 percent to about $625 million (INR 4,679 crore) from $719 million (INR 5,380 crore) in 2023. Hindi films' contribution to the overall box office fell to 40 percent, a decrease from 44 percent the previous year.
Moreover, a significant portion of this, 31 percent, came from the Hindi-dubbed versions of South Indian films like Pushpa 2: The Rule, which alone grossed around $119 million (Rs889 crore). Excluding dubbed films, the decline in original Hindi-language movies was a steep 37 percent.
Regional industries, particularly Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu, showed impressive growth. Malayalam cinema doubled its market share to 10 percent, surpassing $132 million (INR 1,000 crore) for the first time, led by hits like Manjummel Boys, which grossed approximately $21 million (INR 164 crore).
Tamil and Telugu cinema maintained strong market shares of 15 percent and 20 percent, respectively, while Gujarati cinema grew by 66 percent, collecting about $11 million (Rs84 crore).
Pushpa 2: The Rule, a Telugu action thriller, emerged as the highest-grossing film of 2024, amassing approximately $187 million (INR 1,403 crore) globally. Other top performers included Kalki 2898 AD with $100 million (INR 747 crore) and Stree 2 with $90 million (INR 674 crore). The success of these films underscores the growing dominance of regional cinema over Bollywood.
Despite the overall robust earnings, cinema attendance dropped to 88.3 million, reflecting a 6 percent decline from 2023 and 14 percent lower than pre-pandemic levels. The average ticket price rose to $1.78 (INR 134), up from $1.41 (INR 106) in 2019, indicating a trend towards fewer but more expensive cinema visits.
