‘Remembering Gandhi with US’ WeAreOne’ campaign
The campaign commenced in Washington, D.C., on October 1 with activities that included offering meals to those in need.

To commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's 154th birth anniversary on October 2, 2023, the Dharma Into Action Foundation (DhIA), in partnership with the Historic Ebenezer Church in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Lanham, Maryland, has initiated a program aimed at addressing hunger and violence while promoting acts of service in a non-religious and non-political manner.
Named the 'WeAreOne' campaign, this effort is inspired by the common history of non-violent movements shared by Indian Americans and African Americans in their struggles against significant challenges.
Gandhi, renowned for leading the non-violent Indian independence movement, had a profound impact on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who embraced Gandhi's principles in the American civil rights movement. This connection ultimately led to the signing of the Hart-Celler Act of 1965, a pivotal moment that facilitated the substantial expansion of the Indian diaspora in the United States.
The campaign commenced in Washington, D.C., on October 1 with activities that included offering meals to those in need and providing job training within the food service industry. The Heartfulness Institute also hosted an event titled ‘Peace and Non-Violence through Yoga and Meditative Practices’ at Montgomery Blair High School in Bethesda.
As part of the WeAreOne campaign, several other events are scheduled. On October 7, 2023, the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and Restoring One’s Hope of Atlanta will organize "The Community Fair for the Homeless," providing services and assistance to the homeless community.
Additionally, Sri Siva Vishnu Temple and Angarai Cares CBO will distribute groceries to those in need, with the support of volunteers and public officials.
On October 8th, the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and Restoring One’s Hope of Atlanta will coordinate the delivery of food and essential supplies to the unhoused community, followed by a Sunday service at the Ebenezer Baptist Church.
The Gandhi Foundation of the USA will lead a visit to the Mahatma Gandhi statue, and the King Center will host a visit to Freedom Hall.
