Representative Ami Bera, ranking member of the East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee, has cosponsored the Strengthening the Quad Act (H.R.1263), reaffirming the United States' commitment to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) with Japan, Australia, and India.

The bipartisan legislation, reintroduced by Representatives Gregory W. Meeks and Young Kim, directs the State Department to develop a long-term Quad strategy and enhances legislative cooperation among the four democracies.

The legislation mandates the State Department to develop a comprehensive strategy focusing on regional security, economic growth, and democratic resilience. It also proposes the establishment of a Quad Inter-Parliamentary Working Group to facilitate deeper legislative engagement between the U.S., Japan, Australia, and India.

Representative Meeks, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, underscored the importance of the Quad in U.S. foreign policy. “The Quad has proven essential to advancing U.S. interests and ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Meeks said. “Our four critical democracies must demonstrate that we can tackle shared challenges together and deliver tangible benefits for the region.”

The bill has been referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee for further consideration. If passed, it will reinforce the Quad’s role in promoting regional stability and countering security threats, including China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific.

The Quad, an informal alliance of the four nations, has gained prominence in recent years with increased collaboration on security, technology, and economic initiatives. India is tentatively set to host the next Quad Summit in the latter half of the year, with discussions indicating a possible date in September.
