Indian American Congressman Ami Bera (CA-06) has joined 43 of his colleagues in urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to remove Darren Beattie from his post as Acting Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.
Beattie, a Trump administration official in the first term, was fired from his position for attending a white nationalist event and has a history of making controversial and racist remarks.

Bera emphasized the urgency of Beattie’s dismissal in a post on X writing, “Darren Beattie was fired by the first Trump administration for attending a white nationalist conference. Yet now he holds a top position at the State Department. Beattie’s well-documented history of making fringe and racist statements disqualifies him from representing our nation on the world stage.”

The letter, spearheaded by Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (CA-37), outlines concerns over Beattie’s alleged white nationalist affiliations and his public support for authoritarian regimes, including China and Russia. The lawmakers argue that his continued presence at the State Department undermines U.S. diplomatic efforts and global standing.
“Darren Beattie persistently traffics in white nationalist ideology that is actively hostile to Jewish Americans, women, and people of color. For a senior American diplomat to espouse these reprehensible, fringe views in representing the United States on the world stage would be categorically destructive to U.S. global standing,” the lawmakers wrote in their letter to Secretary Rubio.
The letter further highlights Beattie’s history of amplifying Chinese Communist Party propaganda and downplaying the Uyghur genocide. Lawmakers assert that his ideological leanings pose a direct threat to U.S. foreign policy objectives and diplomatic credibility.
The push to remove Beattie has gained traction amid broader concerns over extremism within government institutions. Lawmakers argue that Beattie’s track record and public statements make him unfit for any role at the State Department, particularly one focused on shaping America’s global image.
“As Members who understand the dangers of extremism, white nationalism, and PRC disinformation, we urge you to dismiss Darren Beattie from the State Department,” the letter concludes.
The State Department has yet to respond to the letter or indicate whether any action will be taken against Beattie.
