Indian American Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Ranking Member of the Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, has sent a letter to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) seeking a meeting to discuss the implications of the CBO’s new report on the scoring of future legislation.
The report, titled “Effects of the Immigration Surge on the Federal Budget and the Economy” highlighted that immigrants are expected to significantly reduce the economic deficit of the United States.
“[The] CBO’s work on immigration has injected a much-needed set of facts and rigorous analysis showing the positive contribution of immigrants into both the conversations in Congress and in the public debate,” wrote Ranking Member Jayapal.
She added, “[The] CBO’s report, in line with other recent budgetary projections, found that recent immigrants are projected to lower the deficit by nearly US$ 1 trillion over the next 10 years and add 1.2 trillion in revenue over that same time period. The report also found that because of recently arrived immigrants, our GDP will increase by US$ 8.9 trillion between 2024 and 2034”.
In her letter, Jayapal stated that the CBO's work on immigration has provided essential facts and thorough analysis, demonstrating the positive contributions of immigrants to the discussions in Congress and the public debate.
After reviewing the report, the legislator also wrote that both the public and Congress would benefit if the CBO consistently used a scoring approach that fully captures the contributions of immigrants as the standard for immigration legislation, the letter added.
Jayapal requested additional information from the CBO on several points: the constraints the CBO faces in not providing these types of estimates to Congress on specific immigration legislative proposals and who would need to be involved in discussions about potentially changing the default information reported to Congress in such cases.
She also inquired about who can request that the CBO conduct a more comprehensive estimate scoring approach for legislation and amendments, and what specific factors are included in these comprehensive estimates.
Jayapal has been a strong advocate for recognizing the role of immigrants in the U.S. economy. Earlier this year, she hosted a press conference with local and national business leaders to emphasize the importance of immigrants for businesses of all sizes.
