Rep. Jayapal mourns father’s loss, travels to India to be with family

In an official statement, Indian-American Congresswoman Jayapal announced her plans to travel to India to mourn her father’s loss, while assuring constituents that her office will remain open.

Indian American Representative of Washington’s 7th Congressional District, Pramila Jayapal (WA-07)  issued an official statement on Jan. 21 that her father, M.P. Jayapal, passed away peacefully. 

In the statement, she also mentioned that she would be traveling to India to be with her mother and sister during this time of mourning and remembrance. 

She stated, “My beloved father, M.P. Jayapal, passed away peacefully last night. I am returning to India to be with my mother and sister as we mourn and celebrate the man who gave so much for us to have the opportunities we have had.”

Furthermore, Jayapal assured constituents that her office would remain open to serve the district.  

“My office will remain open as usual to serve WA-07. Thank you for your kind wishes and love.”

Jayapal is a progressive leader and a member of the Democratic Party, known for advocating for social justice, healthcare reform, and immigrant rights. 

She is the first Indian-American woman elected to Congress and has been a vocal advocate for issues such as affordable healthcare, climate action, and racial equity. 

Before her political career, she was a civil rights activist and the executive director of the immigrant rights organization, OneAmerica.
