Indian American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal has announced her appointment to the Foreign Affairs Committee for the 119th Congress, marking the first time she will serve on this critical committee in addition to her legislative duties.

In the new congress, Jayapal will also continue serving as the Ranking Member of the Immigration Subcommittee on the Judiciary Committee and retain her position on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.

Expressing enthusiasm about her new role on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Jayapal  emphasized its alignment with her district’s global connections. “Washington’s 7th Congressional District is home to vital organizations focused on global health and development, and I am eager to represent their interests on this committee,” she said.

“This role allows me to return to issues that are deeply personal to me and critical for advancing human rights and development worldwide. As someone who has lived and worked all over the world, this opportunity allows me to return to issues of personal passion,” Jayapal said. She expressed her readiness to address critical international issues under the leadership of Ranking Member Gregory Meeks,” she noted

As the Ranking Member of the Immigration Subcommittee, Jayapal reaffirmed her commitment to immigration reform. “As the top Democrat on the Immigration Subcommittee, I know firsthand the importance of modernizing our immigration laws to provide legal pathways for immigrants while ensuring border security and a fair process,” she said.

Jayapal, one of only two dozen naturalized citizens in Congress, also criticized Republican immigration policies, including their proposed Project 2025 agenda for mass deportation. “I am proud to lead Democratic efforts for real solutions that prioritize fairness and humanity,” she added.
