Representative Pramila Jayapal, D-Washington, announced today the availability of a new tax filing program called Direct File, launched by the US Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in 12 states including Washington, offers taxpayers a free alternative to traditional tax preparation services.
According to IRS, Direct File shows taxpayers the math so they can be sure that their return is accurate, and they are getting the refund they are entitled to. Live customer service support is also available for Direct File users.
Direct File was launched by IRS in 12 states as a pilot program / U.S. Department of the TreasuryDuring a Q&A session with the Washington State Taxpayer Advocate and the IRS Direct File Team, Jayapal highlighted her ongoing efforts in Congress to simplify tax filing.
She said, 'In Congress, I’ve fought for programs like these to help make it easier to file your taxes. Last Congress, I helped introduce the Tax Filing Simplification Act to make free online tax filing and preparation permanent.”
“I also was proud to support and vote for Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act, which helped create the Direct File service, and fought back in Congress against Republican efforts to cut funding to the IRS,” she added.
"Direct File has received rave reviews so far, so be sure to check it out and see if you're eligible before April 15th," urged Jayapal.
