Hashmi, who represents the 15th district in the Virginia Senate, made history as the first Muslim woman elected to the Senate of Virginia. She has been a prominent voice in education and health, currently serving as the Chair of the Senate Education and Health Committee.

Reflecting on her candidacy, Khanna stated, "I am excited to endorse State Senator Ghazala Hashmi for Lieutenant Governor, the future first Asian-American Lieutenant Governor in Virginia’s history. I know Ghazala and I know she will fight tirelessly for our shared values."

Born in Hyderabad, India, and raised in the United States, Hashmi has built her career on a strong foundation in education, having worked as an academic administrator for 25 years before entering politics. If elected, she would be the first Muslim and South Asian to hold statewide office in Virginia.

He recently announced his decision to not to seek re-election for a third term as Hoboken mayor, with his tenure set to conclude at the end of 2025. Expressing his support, Khanna tweeted, "Excited for you @RaviBhalla and proud to support you!"

Bhalla, born in Passaic, New Jersey, and a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, the London School of Economics, and Tulane University Law School, has been a steadfast advocate for civil rights and community engagement.
