Rep. Khanna spearheads new political reform

The Political Reform Resolution outlines several key proposals, including implementing 12-year term limits for Members of Congress

Congressman Ro Khanna /

Indian American Congressman Ro Khanna introduced a resolution outlining a comprehensive roadmap to enact substantial political reform within the judicial and legislative branches of the U.S. federal government.

“Our political system should not be for sale. Trust in the government has been declining for decades, and Congress must act with urgency to rebuild it. The Political Reform Resolution acknowledges that there are tangible legislative solutions for these problems and that we must pursue them as a comprehensive reform plan to rein in corruption,” said Rep. Khanna.

According to Khanna, lax campaign finance and stock-trading regulations create an environment where lawmakers can prioritize the interests of affluent donors, political action committees (PACs), and personal financial gains over those of their constituents.

The repercussions extend even after their congressional tenure, as a significant number of former members continue to ethically questionably profit, Khanna maintained.

In 2019, more than half of the departing lawmakers maintained influence by leveraging their Capitol Hill connections and securing lucrative positions in the lobbying industry, a release stated.

Khanna also stressed on Supreme Court reform as ongoing investigations have revealed numerous instances of justices filing incomplete financial disclosures, accepting lavish gifts, and misusing staff in an unethical manner. The absence of a binding code of ethics leaves justices largely unaccountable, he said.

The Political Reform Resolution outlines several key proposals, including implementing 12-year term limits for members of Congress. It advocates for a prohibition on members of Congress engaging in individual stockholding and trading during their tenure. Additionally, the resolution calls for a ban on members of Congress and congressional candidates from accepting contributions from political action committees and lobbyists, accompanied by a lifelong prohibition on lobbying for former members of Congress.

The resolution emphasizes the need for a binding code of ethics for Supreme Court Justices. Furthermore, it suggests instituting 18-year term limits and a regular appointment process for future Supreme Court Justices, requiring the addition of a new Justice and the rotation of another every two years.
