Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has condemned the racist reaction to Republican National Committeewoman Harmeet Dhillon's recital of the Sikh prayer 'ardas' at the Republican National Convention that recently took place in Milwaukee.
Dhillon, a Republican leader and civil rights attorney, recited the 'ardas' in the presence of the party's presidential nominee Donald Trump, who was making his first appearance since a gunman attacked him during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, narrowly missing his ear. After her recital Dhillon faced trolling on social media, primarily from supporters of her own party.
Calling the racist attacks on Dhillon “completely unacceptable,” the Congressman from Illinois said, “Discrimination on the basis of race or religion has no place in America, and must be called out and strongly condemned by Democrats and Republicans alike when it occurs.”
The Democrat has consistently spoken out against discrimination towards Indian Americans, regardless of political affiliation. He previously called out the bigoted remarks against Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who was attacked for his Hindu faith.
Before beginning the recital at the convention, Dhillon explained the meaning of the ardas and its importance to followers of the Sikh faith. "I come from a family of Sikh immigrants, and I'm honored to share with you, my fellow Republicans and guests tonight, a prayer from my faith and tradition practiced by over 25 million worldwide."
"We recite the Ardas (Sikh prayer) before any new endeavor, giving thanks to God and asking for his protection and help to uphold the values of humility, truth, courage, service, and justice for all," she added.
