Indian American lawmaker, Raja Krishnamoorthi, representing Illinois’s 8th Congressional District, received the Champion of Freedom Award on Nov. 19 during the Toast to Freedom event organized by the Free Jimmy Lai Campaign.
The event recognizes individuals who have demonstrated steadfast support for democracy, the rule of law, and press freedom, particularly in advocating for those unjustly imprisoned under repressive regimes.
Krishnamoorthi was honored for his efforts in defending democratic values in Hong Kong and globally. In his acceptance speech, he emphasized the urgency of addressing the arbitrary trial of Jimmy Lai, a pro-democracy advocate in Hong Kong, which resumed the same day.
“With today marking the resumption of Jimmy Lai’s arbitrary and unfair trial in Hong Kong, we are once again reminded of the importance of not only ensuring Lai’s immediate and unconditional release but also standing up for the values of freedom and democracy in Hong Kong and across the world,” Krishnamoorthi said. “I look forward to continuing to be a fierce advocate for the rule of law, freedom of the press, and human rights globally.”
The Congressman has also been vocal on issues of human rights abuses in China, particularly the use of forced labor among the Uyghur community. On Nov. 20, the Department of Homeland Security expanded the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List to include 29 additional entities, bringing the total to 107.
Krishnamoorthi lauded this development, describing it as a crucial step in combating forced labor and human rights violations.
