Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has expressed serious concerns over Tulsi Gabbard’s potential nomination as Director of National Intelligence (DNI), citing her past dealings with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and her stance on key national security issues.

Speaking on Bloomberg TV and radio, Krishnamoorthi, a member of the House Intelligence Select Committee and the ranking member of the China Select Committee, questioned Gabbard’s fitness for the position, stating, “Her dealings with Assad in particular are deeply troubling.”

“The fact that she is willing to echo the lines that Vladimir Putin puts out there is deeply troubling. It really calls into question, where is her loyalty,” he said.

Gabbard, a former congresswoman and combat veteran, has faced scrutiny over her foreign policy positions, particularly her controversial 2017 meeting with Assad in Syria. Critics have also pointed to her reluctance to label National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden a traitor as another disqualifying factor.

Krishnamoorthi underscored the significance of Gabbard’s stance on Snowden, explaining, “She’s being asked to potentially lead the national intelligence community. So when somebody actually discloses our secrets to our adversaries, the question is, how does she feel about it? And she’s not willing to answer the question.”

Gabbard has dismissed accusations of being a foreign asset, arguing that she has been labeled a puppet of multiple figures, including Putin and Assad, in an effort to discredit her. While Krishnamoorthi stopped short of calling her a puppet, he reiterated that she lacks the necessary trustworthiness for the DNI role.

“We need somebody who everybody can trust, who will be the ultimate truth teller, and somebody that will tell it straight, whether it’s to the President or to Congress,” he stated.

The Congressman also raised concerns about the broader implications of Gabbard assuming the DNI position, warning that it could create hesitancy among U.S. allies in sharing intelligence. “Then we go back to the silo effect, which in part led to 9/11,” he cautioned.
