Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who was instrumental in investigating JUUL Labs' involvement in the youth vaping epidemic, was featured in the Netflix documentary "Big Vape: The Rise And Fall Of JUUL."
The Indian American legislator has been a leading advocate in the fight against the youth vaping epidemic since 2019. He initiated the first Congressional investigation into the deliberate targeting of children by e-cigarette manufacturers, established the Bipartisan Congressional Caucus To End The Youth Vaping Epidemic, and played a key role in bipartisan efforts to regulate synthetic nicotine.
In 2019, as Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, Krishnamoorthi initiated the inaugural congressional investigation into the youth vaping epidemic. In 2020, after his intervention, the FDA took action to remove flavored disposable e-cigarettes from the market.
In March 2022, the bipartisan omnibus spending bill, which included provisions supported by Congressman Krishnamoorthi to close the synthetic nicotine loophole, became law. These provisions granted the FDA clear authority to regulate the public health impacts of synthetic nicotine.
“In 2019, I launched my investigation into the youth vaping epidemic through hearings on JUUL, and because of that inquiry, we have revealed the ways in which companies have profited off of selling their products to our children, often after directly marketing to them through targeted advertising, flavors, and increasingly high nicotine levels,” said Krishnamoorthi.
“In order to protect our children from the risks of lifelong nicotine addiction, it is critical that the FDA completes its review of e-cigarette marketing applications without further delay and clears the market of menthol, along with all other flavored e-cigarette products,” he asserted.
