In a recent video posted on X, Rep. Pramila Jayapal delivered a sharp critique of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, warning that his radical plans for mass deportations extend far beyond undocumented immigrants.

Jayapal accused Trump of pursuing “radical plans for mass deportations” and targeting all immigrants, including legal residents with green cards and valid visas. “If he can go after legal permanent residents or deport people without any due process, that means he can go after you too,” she warned.

“Trump wants to distract you from the fact that he’s trying to slash programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, so that he can give more tax breaks to the wealthiest greedy billionaires and CEOs,” Jayapal said. “And the way he’s trying to do that is by getting you to blame immigrants for your problems instead of these rich giant corporations.”

She pointed to Trump’s termination of the legal status of more than half a million immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, a move she called a “political stunt” designed to bolster his deportation agenda. The program, which she argued had successfully reduced unauthorized border crossings, was abruptly dismantled. “Now Trump has pulled the rug out from under these individuals…all to increase numbers in his cruel mass deportation campaign,” she said.

Jayapal also pointed out the economic impact of these policies, citing a Congressional Budget Office estimate that immigration increases, including those affected by Trump’s policy shift, were projected to add $8.9 trillion to the U.S. GDP over the next decade.

Beyond immigration policy, Jayapal accused Trump’s administration of cracking down on free speech and student protesters. She cited the cases of Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk, legal immigrants allegedly detained for their political activism. “This campaign to revoke green cards and student visas and stifle campus speech using an arcane Cold War-era law is dangerous,” she said. “Today, they’re going after pro-Palestinian protesters. Tomorrow, they could go after anyone who objects to Trump’s agenda.”

She criticized the administration’s move to dismantle oversight mechanisms at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), saying more than 100 officials tasked with investigating complaints about the immigration system had been fired. “Now, almost the entire civil rights division of the Department of Homeland Security is gone. That is unacceptable and a destruction of our checks and balances,” she said.
