Rep. Thanedar introduces Protection Act to support workers

The PLP Act aims to ease the financial strain on striking workers

Representative Shri Thanedar, an advocate for working families and a ranking member of the Subcommittee on Transportation And Maritime Security introduced the Picket Line Protection Act, also known as the PLP Act, cosponspored by Representative Rashida Tlaib.

The PLP Act, aims to ease the financial strain on striking workers. It proposes an amendment to the Internal Revenue Code, which would exempt strike pay from individual gross income tax. As a result, the tax rate on these funds would be reduced to 0 percent, providing substantial financial relief to families while they are on strike.

The Picket Line Protection Act aims to eliminate income tax on strike pay in the United States. Striking workers in Michigan's 13th District, represented by Thanedar, receive up to $600 per week before taxes. This legislation seeks to ease the tax burden on these strike benefits, recognizing them as vital financial support for families during strikes.

“Striking for better conditions is a brave and necessary act, yet our current tax system punishes workers for standing up for their rights. By exempting strike pay from income tax, we're ensuring that workers in Michigan's 13th District, and across America, can focus on fighting for their futures rather than worrying about making ends meet,” Thanedar said.

“I am proud to endorse the Picket Line Protection Act of 2023, introduced by Representative Shri Thanedar. Today, more and more workers are exercising their legal right to strike for fair wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions. During these trying times, every dollar counts, and this legislation would help those workers provide for their families by retaining more of their hard-earned strike pay. I urge you to join CWA District 4 in supporting this vital bill,” said Linda L. Hinton, the vice president of Communications Workers of America.
