The Child Labor Coalition (CLC) has recognized Indian American Congressman Shri Thanedar as one of the 25 Congressional Champions of Child Labor Protections for 2024.
Thanedar was named for his commitment to combating child labor exploitation across the United States and for his support of legislation aimed at strengthening protections for young workers.
During the 118th Congress, Thanedar co-sponsored five key child labor bills endorsed by the CLC, addressing an alarming rise in child labor violations. This included the Children Harmed in Life-Threatening or Dangerous (CHILD) Labor Act of 2023 and the Protecting Children Act, both of which call for increased penalties and protective measures to safeguard young farmworkers.
According to the Department of Labor, such violations have escalated by 472 percent between 2015 and 2023, bringing to light unsafe conditions faced by minors in the workforce — conditions that have resulted in severe injuries and fatalities.
Reid Maki, CLC’s director of Child Labor Advocacy, highlighted the importance of legislative action in preserving these protections“Over the last two years, child labor protections have faced unprecedented threats as over 30 states sought to weaken regulations on the hours children can work and the types of hazardous work children can perform.” l
Representing 36 organizations committed to ending exploitative child labor, child marriage, and child trafficking, the CLC applauded Thanedar’s efforts. As the coalition marks its 35th year, it looks forward to continued collaboration with Thanedar and other champions in the 119th Congress to advance child labor protections and uphold children’s safety and rights in the workforce.
