Indian American lawmakers Ro Khanna and Ami Bera, have strongly condemned the New Year’s Day terror attack in New Orleans, which left 15 dead and over 30 injured, including two police officers.

The attack, carried out by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US Army veteran from Texas, has shocked the nation.

Posting on X, Khanna stated, “I am deeply saddened by the horrific attack last night in New Orleans, and my heart goes out to the victims and their families. There is no justification for this kind of violence.”

Bera also expressed his support for the affected community, writing, “I am monitoring the horrific attack this morning in New Orleans. My heart goes out to the victims and all those impacted by this abhorrent act of violence. New Orleans is a strong and vibrant community, and I have full confidence that its spirit will remain unbroken in the face of this tragedy.”

The attack unfolded when Jabbar, reportedly inspired by ISIS, drove a rented truck into a crowd in New Orleans. He then opened fire before being killed in a shootout with police. Authorities found weapons and a potential explosive device in his vehicle, as well as two other explosive devices in the French Quarter, which were safely defused.

President Joe Biden also condemned the attack, noting investigators are probing Jabbar’s possible links to terrorist organizations and a Tesla truck fire outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas. Biden said, “The FBI also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he’s inspired by ISIS, expressing the desire to kill.”
