Congressman Shri Thanedar is raising concerns over Elon Musk’s growing influence in federal financial operations, criticizing the billionaire’s newly granted access to the U.S. Treasury’s payment system.
In a sharp rebuke, Thanedar accused the Trump administration of allowing an "unelected billionaire" to wield power over critical government funds, including Social Security, Medicare, and federal salaries.
“Elon Musk wasn't on the ballot, yet Trump is giving him influence over national security, federal spending, and government hiring,” Thanedar said in a statement. “No billionaire should have that kind of unchecked power.”
Elon Musk has been granted special access to the U.S. Treasury’s payment system that processes nearly $6 trillion—including Social Security, Medicare, salaries, and other critical services.

An unelected billionaire should be nowhere near the sensitive information of Americans!
The controversy stems from Musk’s leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump administration task force aimed at reducing federal spending. The group has now been given access to the Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which handles nearly $6 trillion in annual payments.
Critics warn that DOGE’s oversight of federal disbursements—along with its ability to access sensitive personal data such as Social Security numbers—poses a significant risk to government transparency and consumer privacy.
“Musk is putting corporate profits over American workers, and Trump is letting it happen,” Thanedar added. “These reckless and unconstitutional actions are a direct threat to democracy, national security, and the personal information of Americans.”
Concerns over DOGE’s role intensified after the White House announced a freeze on federal grants and loans, which has disrupted state Medicaid programs, nonprofits, and Americans relying on government aid. Some state Medicaid agencies reported being locked out of the Department of Health and Human Services' financial tracking systems, further fueling fears of financial instability.
Thanedar vowed to take action, stating that he and fellow Democrats in Congress would fight back through legislative measures and legal challenges.
“I’m fighting back—alongside Democrats in Congress and the courts—to keep our government accountable to the people and protect my constituents from an unconstitutional power grab,” he said.
