Reshma Kewalramani named among TIME magazine's ‘100 Most Influential People’

Kewalramani, who immigrated from India to the United States at the age of 11, helped Vertex secure the first-ever FDA approval for CRISPR-based therapy.

Reshma Kewalramani, the CEO and President of a US biotechnology company Vertex, has been named in TIME magazine’s The Most Influential People of 2025. She is the only person of Indian-origin to be featured in this prestigious list.

Kewalramani, 52, stands out with her exceptional career in medical research and leadership skills. In 2020, she became the first female CEO of Vertex, after joining the large, public US biotech company in 2017 as Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President of Global Medicines Development and Medical Affairs.
 
Born in Mumbai, Kewalramani migrated to the United States at the age of 11. She helped Vertex secure the first-ever FDA approval for CRISPR-based therapy, which treats sickle cell disease by correcting patients’ own DNA mutations.

According to Vertex, Kewalramani completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and her fellowship in nephrology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital combined program. She received her medical degree from the seven-year medicine program at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology.

Kewalramani is also an alumna of the Harvard Business School, where she completed the General Management Program. She has received a number of distinguished honors and awards for her leadership and contributions to science and innovation, including the Harvard Business School Alumni Achievement Award, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Boston University School of Medicine, the International Institute of New England Golden Door Award, the New England Council New Englander of the Year Award, and the Asian American Business Development Center Pinnacle Award.

Furthermore, the Vertex CEO has been named one of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women, a Changemaker by CNBC, one of Boston Business Journal’s “Power 50,” one of Boston magazine’s most influential Bostonians, a top CEO by Barron’s, and one of Business Insider’s “10 People Transforming Healthcare.”
