The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) has announced Indian American Nevada Assembly member Reuben D’Silva as the keynote speaker for the commencement ceremony to be held on May.13.
An alumnus of the college, D’Silva is known for his exceptional dedication to education and community service. “I'm proud to be a @CSNCoyote and I'm very much looking forward to addressing the graduates. CONGRATS c/o 2024!” he said in a post on X.
Originally from Mumbai, India, D’Silva immigrated to the United States and served as a U.S. Marine. Despite encountering challenges and being shot in the forearm during his military service in Iraq, he continued his educational journey, earning degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University.
For his bravery in defending American Freedom, the Indian American was awarded both the Purple Heart and Naval Achievement Medal. After reirin, he served as a public school teacher at his alma mater, Rancho High School, in Las Vegas.
As a teacher, D’Silva has motivated hundreds to pursue higher education and give back to their communities. He organized community events and advicated for civic engagement, which eventually led him to serve as a state assembly member in 2022.
CSN president Dr. Angela Whitaker-Williams expressed enthusiasm for D’Silva’s selection, noting the relevance of his journey to inspire the graduating class. The commencement ceremony will celebrate academic achievements and the values of determination and service embodied by D’Silva, the college said in a statement.
