Rice University has established a new hub in Bengaluru, India to mark the launch of its new initiative Rice Global India and expand its international footprint. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Nov. 18 to inaugurate the facility.

The Rice Global India initiative aims to strengthen collaborations in education and technology while addressing global challenges through partnerships in India.

Rice University president Reginald DesRoches emphasized the importance of the initiative, describing India as a “country of tremendous opportunity” for fostering collaboration in research, innovation, and education.  “Our presence in India is a critical step in expanding our global reach, and we are excited to engage more with India’s academic leaders and industries to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time,” he said.

The initiative aims to deepen collaborations with premier institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru. Joint research initiatives, student and faculty exchanges, and projects in fields like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and sustainable energy are among the planned activities.

Caroline Levander, vice president for global at Rice, highlighted India’s alignment with Rice’s strategic priorities. “India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing education and technology markets makes it a crucial partner for Rice’s global vision. The U.S.-India relationship, underscored by initiatives like the U.S.-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology, provides fertile ground for educational, technological and research exchanges,” she said.
