UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pulled a Kevin McCallister from the classic Christmas Home Alone movies, in a festival-themed video that was posted on X. It was shot at Sunak’s Office at 10 Downing Street, the official residence and office of the British Prime Minister.
Sunak can be seen working alone in his office in the opening of the video. “Am I the only one here?” he asks. After realizing that he is alone, and its Christmas, Sunak is seen loosening up and having a little fun before eventually being drawn back into work mode by a telephone ring.
Merry Christmas from Downing Street
Sunak answers the phone with “Harry, you have got the wrong number,” sparking speculations about this being a dig at Prince Harry. However, it is believed that the PM was alluding to Harry Cole, The Sun’s political editor, who on October 22, wrote an article about the former’s number being leaked online, as highlighted by Mediaite.
Sunak’s video has garnered 7.3 million views, at the time of this writing. It has been reposted 3,800 times, liked by thirteen thousand people, the video have been saved a thousand times, and has attracted 5,800 comments/opinions.
While it’s the first time for Sunak showing off his playful side, and a section of his followers have appreciated him for it, the PM drew flak from another section who opined that the message did not land, and it made him appear “more distant from us.”
British author Simon Scarrow’s comment reads, “It's an impossible sell to make someone as evidently arrogant, entitled and insincere as Rishi Sunak appear like a normal person. Every PR video put out by his people merely makes him look more distant from the rest of us.” Scarrow concluded the post: “God knows, but we need that General Election as soon as possible.”
