Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s ongoing visit to India has been marked by a celebration of his heritage, literature, and cricket. Sunak, who was in Jaipur on Feb.1 for the Jaipur Literature Festival, traveled to Mumbai, where he engaged in a quintessentially local pastime—playing tennis-ball cricket at Parsee Gymkhana.
Sunak’s Mumbai visit comes days after his appearance at the Jaipur Literature Festival, where his wife, Akshata Murty, shared the stage with her mother, philanthropist and author Sudha Murty.
“No trip to Mumbai would be complete without a game of tennis ball cricket,” Sunak posted on X (formerly Twitter) before heading to the Cricket Club of India (CCI) at Churchgate for breakfast. He later attended the India-England T20 match at Wankhede Stadium on Feb.2, accompanied by his father-in-law, Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy.

After England’s loss, Sunak shared a selfie on Instagram, offering words of encouragement to the team. “Tough day for England at the Wankhede, but I know our team will come back stronger. Congratulations to Team India on the win,” he wrote.
Born to Indian-origin parents who moved to Britain from East Africa, Sunak made history as the UK’s youngest prime minister in over 200 years. His tenure ended in November 2024 following the Labour Party’s landslide victory, though he remains a Conservative MP.
The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, also attended the T20 match at Wankhede Stadium. During his visit, the Duke met the captains of both teams and interacted with young winners of the International Award for Young People (IAYP), the Indian iteration of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.
