Remember the lyrics to the popular song from The Sound of Music? Maria… it goes:
‘When I’m with her I’m confused Out of focus and bemused And I never know exactly where I am Unpredictable as weather She’s as flighty as a feather She’s a darling! She’s a demon! She’s a lamb! She’d outpester any pest Drive a hornet from its nest She could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl She is gentle! She is wild! She’s a riddie! She’s a child! She’s a headache! She’s an angel’ This song personified (and masculinized) could be Ranveer Singh, through and through. Here are a few reasons why….
Not in a creepy–crawly way but the brilliance of his craft is in the perfection with which he changes from Bittoo to Bajirao, from Murad to Jayesh bhai, in the blink of an eye. It is hardly a surprise that Deepika Padukone herself confessed that she thought him to be this Delhi boy, from up north, when she first met him, all thanks to his impeccable acting as Bittoo in Band Baaja Baaraat, she never believed he was from the suburbs of Mumbai. If she could be fooled at the dinner table, imagine how well he plays with his audience.
He morphed and moved on so quickly from one character to another, that his first fanbase consisted of people in awe of his method to madness.
Brand endorsements are a side hustle for all Bollywood celebrities, their influence on the masses milked to the tee by chocolate brands, cola drinks, beauty products, paint, cement, and more. Never once did anyone ever think of catering to the more carnal products till Ranveer Singh leaped onto the scene.
Ranveer shared in an interview that he had himself copywritten the ad for the ‘Do The Rex campaign. Despite having a smashing entry with his debut film, the consecutive flops thereafter hurt Ranveer’s endorsement career. All the brands vanished from the scene and Ranveer decided to take the matter into his own hands.
He called his management team and told them he wanted to pitch an idea for a contraceptive brand, the pitch blew them over and the rest as they say is history. That’s Ranveer Singh for you… if you think this was just a gimmick to grab eyeballs early on in his career, you might not be completely wrong, but Ranveer is still ‘Doing the Rex’ he recently did a commercial with Johnny Sins and stumped his fans and the industry at large.
There is nothing lukewarm about Ranveer Singh, everything he does, he does it with a level of enthuse that will leave a mere mortal exhausted. Not just his fans, but even his ultimate Idol Hrithik Roshan would vouch for it.
Roshan had casually challenged Ranveer for what was trending as the Bang Bang challenge, during the release of Roshan’s film in 2014, the challenge was to dance on the streets of Mumbai. Little did Hrithik know that Ranveer would squeeze himself in a Krrish costume, plank his stereo in the middle of a busy street in Mumbai suburbs, and dance his heart out for Hrithik, with mobs running after him and police looking bewildered.
It is never easy to hear a joke aimed at you, and yet, with his bald head covered with a hat, Ranveer along with Arjun Kapoor agreed to get slammed on national television. The AIB Roast is perhaps the most-watched roast, in India but it turned out to be a nightmare for the actors who got sued for obscenity and whatnot.
But nothing fazed Ranveer, he took the knock on his chin and laughed through the whole episode, quite like he did when he decided to replace his pants with skirts and wear the most colorful clothes his stylists could acquire, he enjoyed the laugh he spread as he put himself on display on the red carpet.
Ranveer staunchly rebukes the archetypical mard ka dard nahi hota stereotypes. He cries when he wants to, he hugs and kisses not just his wife but also his friends and is perpetually having his emotions brimming at the surface.
When Ranveer along with Arjun Kapoor landed on a talk show where Kapoor spoke about his mom’s fight with cancer, which she lost just days before her big dream of seeing Arjun as a hero on the big screen could have come true. The pain Arjun felt, reflected in Ranveer’s eyes as he choked on his tears and hugged his pal.
Even during Deepika’s struggle with depression, it was Ranveer who held her hand not knowing if it was the right thing to do, or should he have given her some space. His steadfast need to stand alongside his loved ones through thick and thin will always make him a green flag.
Deepika Padukone might be everyone’s dream girl but those who know the couple claim it is she who considers herself lucky for finding love with someone like Ranveer. Not only is he one of those husbands who make it a point to express their love every day not just with the 'I love you but also with kindness and compassion.
Now when they are all set to welcome their firstborn into this world, the tender love and care with which he leads Deepika through the swarm of paps that are forever hounding them, is touching.
Not many low but Ranveer is not the first actor in his family. Chand Burke, the actress in films like Kahan Gaye and Hamari Manzil amongst others is Ranveer’s grandmother She always wanted to be an actress, and while there are a few films to her credit, she never really managed to make a career out of it.
With marriage and societal obligations, her career faded into oblivion before it ever had a chance. Ranveer had taken her dreams and turned it into a reality with his celebrated career. Not once did he ask his maternal cousins (Sonam and Rhea Kapoor) and their illustrious family to help him build a career.
