Samford University’s School of Public Health has announced the appointment of nutrition researcher Suresh Mathews as its interim dean.
Mathews steps into this leadership role after serving as professor and chair in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics since 2015.
Post his postdoctoral training at Wayne State University School of Medicine, he joined in the same institute as faulty. Later, he joined Auburn University’s department of nutrition, where he served as associate professor and graduate program director before transitioning to Samford University.
Mathews has dedicated his career to impactful research in obesity and diabetes, authoring over 130 peer-reviewed articles. His work has attracted funding from the American Diabetes Association and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture. A recognized expert, he has served on editorial boards and as a reviewer for major funding agencies, in addition to being an invited speaker at global conferences.
Beyond academia, Mathews actively engages in community service. He serves on the boards of the association of Nutrition Departments and Programs and the Community Foodbank of Central Alabama.
Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Mathews stated, "I am excited to work alongside our students and faculty inspiring one another to advance the field of public health."
"Since 2013, we’ve been preparing students for lives of service driven by our motto, “The world needs you now.” That message feels more important than ever, and I’m committed to helping our students, faculty, staff and the larger community live it out every day," Mathews said.
Mathews completed his PhD in biochemistry at the University of Madras, India. His postdoctoral training in obesity and diabetes was at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan.
