Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology on January 25.
The honorary doctorate, presented on behalf of the board of regents of the University System of Georgia, is the most significant honor the institute bestows on an individual, according to a institute release.
“Satya Nadella has led a remarkable transformation of one of the most iconic and impactful companies of our time and has overseen the creation of an unprecedented $2.45 trillion in shareholder value,” said Ángel Cabrera, Georgia Tech president.
He lauded Microsoft’s partnership with Georgia Tech which has led to extraordinary opportunities for the institute’s students and faculty members. “We are grateful for his leadership and ongoing support of the institute, and look forward to honoring him and hosting him on campus,” he added.
Nadella, who grew up in Hyderabad, earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Mangalore University. After moving to the US, he gained a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was a member of the technology staff at Sun Microsystems before joining Microsoft in 1992.
While working at Microsoft, he earned another master’s in business administration from the University of Chicago.
In 2014, Nadella was appointed as Microsoft CEO, the third person to hold the office in the company’s nearly 40-year history, after co-founder Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. He also serves on the board of trustees of the University of Chicago as well as on the Starbucks board of directors.
He was named a Time 100 honouree in 2018. A year later, he emerged as the Financial Times Person of the Year and Fortune magazine Businessperson of the Year. Nadella was honored with Padma Bhushan in 2022.
