Senator Hashmi qualifies for primary in race for Virginia Lt. Gov

If elected, she will create history as the first Asian-American Lieutenant Governor in Virginia’s history.

Indian American politician and Virginia state Senator Ghazala Hashmi officially qualified to appear on the ballot for Virginia's Lieutenant Governor in the June primary elections.

The Democratic Party of Virginia confirmed her candidacy alongside other contenders, including Babur Lateef, Aaron Rouse, Victor Salgado, and Levar Stoney.

Expressing gratitude to her supporters, Senator Hashmi acknowledged the collective effort that led to her qualification. "Thank you to the innumerable volunteers and our wonderful field team who gathered over 16,000 signatures to secure our place on the ballot for June primary! I am determined to fight hard for all Virginians as your next Lieutenant Governor."

In her campaign, Senator Hashmi has committed to furthering progressive values, focusing on public education, voting rights, reproductive freedom, gun violence prevention, environmental protection, housing, and affordable healthcare access. 

Senator Hashmi made history in 2019 by becoming the first Muslim and first South Asian American elected to the Virginia Senate, representing the 10th district. Following redistricting in 2021, she now serves the 15th district, which includes parts of Richmond City and Chesterfield County. 

Before her tenure in the Senate, she had a 25-year career in academia, serving as a professor and founding director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

Her campaign for Lieutenant Governor has garnered endorsements from various community leaders and organizations. Supporters highlight her dedication to women's reproductive freedom, strong public schools, safe communities, and a thriving economy. 

State Senator Kannan Srinivasan remarked, "I’m supporting Senator Ghazala Hashmi for Lieutenant Governor because I know she will stand for our values and our hard fought Democratic accomplishments. With her proven track record in improving education, economy, and healthcare she will continue to bring the best for Virginians."

Congressman Ro Khanna also endorsed Hashmi, stating, "I am excited to endorse State Senator Ghazala Hashmi for Lieutenant Governor, the future first Asian-American Lieutenant Governor in Virginia’s history. I know Ghazala and I know she will fight tirelessly for our shared values."
