In the April 28 election, a record 22 Indian-origin candidates emerged victorious, marking an increase from the 17 Indian-origin MPs in the outgoing Parliament. They include particularly Punjabi and Sikh individuals, with multiple turbaned Sikh MPs and South Asian women entering Canada’s Parliament.

He described the results as “a matter of great pride,” noting that these leaders have earned the trust of the people through their “hard work, honesty, and humanitarian service.”

The SGPC chief emphasized that Punjabis living abroad are not only preserving their cultural, religious, and historical values but are also making impactful contributions to public life in the countries they reside in.

He added that these victories demonstrate how immigrant communities, while facing various challenges, have remained steadfast in their commitment to both their heritage and civic responsibilities.

“I hope that the elected Sikh and Punjabi Members of Parliament will uphold their religious values and effectively represent public trust in Canadian politics,” he said.

Candidates who made significant gains in the elections include—Ruby Sahota of the Liberal Party re-elected from the newly created Brampton North—Caledon riding; Amarjeet Gill of the Conservative Party defeated incumbent Kamal Khera in Brampton West. Sukhman Singh Gill, also a Conservative, secured the newly formed Abbotsford—South Langley seat, while Dalwinder Gill unseated George Chahal in Calgary McKnight; In Fleetwood—Port Kells, Gurbux Saini won as a Liberal candidate.

Dhami also extended congratulations to Canada’s Liberal Party and its leader, Mark Carney, for their electoral performance. He expressed hope that the incoming Members of Parliament will remain committed to their values and work toward the ideals of social justice and community welfare.
