Sikh International Film Festival highlights diaspora issues

From Taliban-Era Afghanistan to American Streets: A Cinematic Journey Celebrating Sikh Narratives and Empowering Voices

The Sikh International Film Festival 2023 that took place at the Rubin Museum in Manhattan, New York highlighted issues relevant to the Sikh diaspora through impactful stories and standout films.

The festival presented by the Sikh Art & Film Foundation featured a lineup of ten films, covering a diverse range of topics from current affairs to historical perspectives.

The films showcased included, "Baywatana: Without a Country’, that explores the plight of Sikhs and Hindus in Taliban-era Afghanistan; "American Sikh”, a true story of Indian American Sikh trying to blend with the Americans and “Colonel Kalsi: Beyond the Call”, another true story of a young Sikh who fought to serve in the US Army with his turban and beard.

Commenting on the impact of the films on the audience, Vikas Khanna, Indian American chef and co-producer of American Sikh said, “One of the highlights of screening 'American Sikh' at Sikh International Film Festival was engaging the little ones and the youth who could see themselves reflected in our film. Their dreams and hopes keep me inspired."

Chair SAFF – Film Festival, Dr. Paul Johar said, “This year's Sikh International Film Festival showcased a powerful lineup addressing contemporary Sikh Diaspora issues, delved into the challenges faced by the community.”

“The festival, with its captivating stories and impactful quotes from filmmakers, not only celebrated Sikh culture but also provided a dynamic platform for filmmakers to showcase their artistry,” Johar added.

Since its inception in 2004, the Sikh International Film Festival, has aimed to foster awareness of Sikh culture through films and arts.
