The Florida Book Awards (FBA) has recognized Indian American children’s author Sita Singh with the Gold Medal in the Young Children’s Literature category for her picture book Mango Memories.

The award honors recognized Singh for her heartfelt storytelling and ability to preserve generational traditions through literature.

Mango Memories follows a young girl’s journey to create her first mango-picking memory, drawing on family stories and cultural heritage. As she attempts to pick the fruit, she is unable to succeed, even after hearing her brother's memory of his first mango-picking experience and her grandmother's advice to use a stone. Despite her struggles, the girl remains determined to create her own mango memory.

Set in a vibrant mango grove and narrated by a young Indian child, Mango Memories honors generational traditions and introduces young readers to South Asian culture. Through themes of perseverance and connection, the book encourages children to embrace their heritage while exploring the importance of family bonds and shared experiences.

Singh, originally from Ahmedabad, India, now resides in South Florida. She began writing children’s books to address the lack of South Asian representation in literature. Her debut book, Birds of a Feather, was selected for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Known for her works celebrating South Asian culture, diversity, and social-emotional learning, Singh is passionate about sharing stories from her childhood, inspired by her grandmother’s oral storytelling and her experiences growing up in a multigenerational household. Her upcoming titles include ‘Let’s Celebrate Diwali’, set to release in the summer of 2025, and ‘Indigo Hands’ set to release in spring of 2026.

Singh and other award winners will be honored at the Abitz Family Dinner & Awards Banquet on April 3, 2025, at Cascades Park in Tallahassee. The Florida Book Awards, coordinated by Florida State University Libraries, is a statewide literary competition honoring outstanding books published in 2024. A panel of jurors selected 31 winners from 190 eligible submissions across 11 categories.
