The cricket tournament at the LA 2028 Olympic Games will feature six teams each in the men’s and women’s events, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on April 9, along with athlete quotas and team sizes.

A total of 90 athlete quotas have been allotted for each gender, allowing every team to field a 15-member squad in the fast-paced T20 format.

While cricket’s inclusion in LA 2028 was approved by the IOC in 2023, the format and structure were finalized this week following an executive board meeting. The tournament will mark cricket’s return to the Olympic stage after more than a century, with its only previous appearance being at Paris 1900.

This time, the sport is expected to be a high-profile addition to the Games, given the global popularity of the T20 format.

The schedule and venue details are yet to be announced. The final list of participating nations is also pending, with qualification criteria expected to be released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in the coming months.

India (men) and New Zealand (women) are the current T20 world champions, and all 12 ICC full-member nations, along with top associate teams, are likely to be in contention for Olympic qualification.

Cricket is one of five new sports to feature at LA 2028, alongside baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes) and squash.
