The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), a nonprofit representing North America’s manufacturing industry, has elected Ajay Malshe, a distinguished professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University, as its 2025 International Director.

Malshe, currently the R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson distinguished professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University, brings four decades of combined experience in academia and the nano manufacturing industry. His leadership roles include serving as a president’s fellow at Purdue and as the inaugural director of the Materials and Manufacturing Research Laboratories (MMRL).

Malshe’s expertise spans advanced manufacturing, bio-inspired design, functional multi-materials, and system integration. His work has led to significant advancements in areas such as in-space servicing and manufacturing, biomanufacturing for food, and microelectronics packaging.

A prolific innovator, Malshe has published over 225 papers and holds more than 28 patents, resulting in over 20 award-winning nano manufactured products. His contributions have benefited industries including energy, defense, aerospace, and transportation. In 2018, he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering for innovations in nano manufacturing—a prestigious honor.

Jeannine Kunz, SME’s executive director and CEO, praised Malshe’s appointment. “His extensive professional and academic experience, and impressive honors received both nationally and internationally make him ideal for this role as part of the governing body of SME. The organization and the rest of the Board are sure to benefit from Professor Malshe’s already evident enthusiasm for contributing to SME and the greater manufacturing industry,” Kunz said.

SME, a nonprofit organization established in 1932, represents the interests of manufacturers, academia, professionals, and students. The SME board of directors, elected by the organization’s voting members, includes leaders from various manufacturing disciplines, who govern SME’s policies and initiatives, fostering innovation and growth in the manufacturing sector.
