Twenty-five South Asian organizations across Canada have issued an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling for the Hindu idealogical organisation, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliates to be designated as hate groups and far-right extremist entities.

This appeal underscores rising concerns over the alleged involvement of RSS-linked groups in violent acts and intimidation targeting Sikh and other minority communities in Canada.

The letter, co-authored by organizations such as Hindus for Human Rights, the Canadian Council of Indian Muslims, and Canadians Against Oppression and Persecution, citing a 2023 report by the National Council of Canadian Muslims linking anti-Sikh violence to RSS-affiliated groups, calls for urgent governmental action.

“The presence of Sangh Parivar and RSS-related groups sadly but predictably overlaps with incidents of Hindu supremacist rhetoric and actions in Canada,” the report states, describing the RSS’s ideology as rooted in European fascist principles and politically driven by India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The letter urges the Canadian government to extend protections to South Asian minority communities and investigate RSS-linked human rights abuses. “The atrocities against minorities in India under a Hindu nationalist government, often with impunity, are now manifesting in Canada. The government must take decisive steps to ensure the safety of its citizens against such extremist ideologies,” the statement reads.

The appeal comes amid heightened Canada-India tensions after the 2023 assassination of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. Canadian authorities, including the RCMP, have alleged “foreign government agents” involvement in violent incidents within Canada, indicating a pattern of “coercion, organized crime, and deadly violence” by certain RSS-related networks.
