The Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society (VIBC) is returning with its seventh annual celebration of South Asian music, art, wellness, in Surrey and Vancouver in Jun. 2024. The 5X Fest is scheduled from Jun. 13 to 16.
The multi-day, multi-venue festival’s signature lineup includes storytelling, music, art, self-care, and conversations. The festival’s lineup includes its signature events – the 5X Art Party, 5X Block Party, and self-care Sunday with 5X.
The 5X Art Party is a sold-out event every year, according to the event’s website. This year the Art Party will be held at the Beaumont Studios on Jun. 14. Attendees will be able to meet emerging artists, and experience art, music, and connection all together. The Art Party is being curated by Ritesh Matlani, a Surrey-based queer floral designer and filmmaker.
Born and raised in the Middle East of Indian heritage, Matlani is drawn to stories of how different cultures thrive on foreign shores through cultural adjustments. His floral installations are inspired by wild meadows and forests. As a filmmaker, his work is themed on queer mythology, gay identity, suppressed agony, South Asian diaspora, and immigration. Tickets to the Art Party be obtained here.
The 5X Block Party will take place on Jun. 15 at Surrey Civic Plaza, featuring live music, food vendors, art installations, and a marketplace to buy clothing and more local vendors. The event will be hosted by Joty Kay and Kirpan Dhillon. General admission to the event is free, those interested can RSVP here. A few lucky winners from the list will win an all-access VIP pass to 5X Fest.
On Jun. 16, 5X Fest has arranged Self-Care Sunday, a half-day event packed with breathwork, meditation, journaling, and movement workshops. The event will be concluded with a fireside chat with South Asian digital influencers Gurnaz Sandhu, Joty Kay, and Priya Sidhu, hosted by Summan Kandola. The influencers will reveal how they amassed a global following through their authentic self. Tickets to the event are priced between CAD$46 (US$33.83) to CAD$62 (US$45.60)
