Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SPGC), the apex Sikh organization in India has strongly condemned the assassination of a Sikh musician outside a gurudwara in Selma, California.

The victim, Raj Singh (29) was shot dead on February 24. The incident is suspected to be an act of hate crime. Dhami has requested a thorough investigation by authorities of the U.S. government in this case.

Singh, also known as Goldy, hailed from Tanda Sahuwala village in Bijnor district in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He resided in the U.S. with a Sikh kirtan group for one and a half years, as per a report.

Singh was standing outside the place of worship when unidentified assailants fired shots at him. The singer sustained injuries to his abdomen. His family was notified about the incident the following day. Singh’s brother-in-law, in a statement to the Times of India, said they are in touch with the Gurudwara committee for more information.

The victim’s post-mortem remains pending five days after being shot dead. His family has appealed to the U.S. government for the arrest of the culprits.

Dhami offered his condolences to Singh’s family members. He said such incidents cause a sense of insecurity among the communities, as per a statement posted by the SPGC on X. “A Granthi holds reverence in Sikh community. Sikhs have played a great role in the development and growth in whichever country they live.”

The SGPC president also requested the Ministry of External Affairs of the government of India to take up the matter with its U.S. counterparts to ensure justice for Singh’s family.
