Indian spiritual leader Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s decades-long contributions to peace, education, and humanitarian service was highlighted in the United States’ Congressional Record.

In a statement on the floor of the U.S. House on April 3, Representative Timothy M. Kennedy of New York commended Gurudev’s leadership in building “an unprecedented worldwide movement for a stress-free, violence-free society.”

Kennedy cited the global reach of Gurudev’s organizations—the Art of Living and the International Association for Human Values—which have collectively impacted an estimated 800 million people across 180 countries.

“His programs have empowered individuals to tackle challenges at the global, national, community, and individual levels,” the lawmaker said. “His lifelong commitment to peace, education, and humanitarian work continues to inspire millions worldwide, and we are all the better for it,” he added.

The lawmaker’s remarks came as Gurudev visited Western New York to lead ‘The Journey Within’, a public event centered on meditation and self-discovery.

Born in 1956 in southern India, Gurudev began spiritual practice at an early age and went on to study both Vedic literature and modern science. In 1982, during a period of silence, he developed Sudarshan Kriya, a breathing technique that has since become central to the Art of Living Foundation’s global programs promoting mental well-being and stress relief.

He has been involved in peacebuilding efforts in conflict-affected regions including Kashmir, Iraq, and Colombia. In 2016, he played a key role in supporting the peace process between the Colombian government and the FARC rebel group.
