Stockton University to screen documentary on Indian-origin dancer's journey from Mumbai to NYC
The free screening is open to the public and presented by Stockton’s School of Arts and Humanities.

An award-winning documentary that chronicles the journey of a young Indian dancer from the streets of Mumbai to the stages of New York will be screened at Stockton University on Sept. 17.
“Call Me Dancer” features Manish Chauhan, an athletic street dancer from Mumbai whose working-class parents depend on their only son's support. When he inadvertently enters an inner-city dance school and encounters a curmudgeonly 70-year-old Israeli-American ballet master, a hunger arises within him to make it as a professional dancer, but the odds are stacked against him.
The documentary has won several awards, including the Audience Award at the 2024 Sonoma International Film Festival and the Next Wave Jury Prize at the 2024 Miami Jewish Film Festival.
Currently an artist at the Peridance Contemporary Dance Company in New York City, Chauhan previously played the lead role in the Netflix film “Yeh Ballet,” which is a fictionalized version of his life.
Chauhan will attend the screening at 4:30 p.m. (local time) in the Campus Center Theatre, and a discussion will follow immediately after the screening. Earlier in the day he will present a master class to Stockton Dance students. The free screening is open to the public and presented by Stockton’s School of Arts and Humanities.
