Stony Brook honors Indian-American with 40 Under Forty Alumni Award

Indian-American anesthesiologist and interventional pain physician at Stony Brook Medicine, Amruta G. Desai, will be recognized as one of Stony Brook University’s 40 Under Forty alumni during a ceremony on Oct. 24 at the Charles B. Wang Center.
The awards honor alumni who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and contributions to their communities.
Desai, who holds dual degrees in business administration (MBA) and public health (MPH) from Stony Brook University, has established herself as a leader in the field of pain management. She is double board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management and has made significant contributions to improving healthcare access for underserved populations on Long Island.
One of Desai’s major achievements includes developing an operational improvement plan for a New York City medical center. This initiative employed public health strategies in a cost-effective manner, increasing access to healthcare for underrepresented communities and improving key health outcomes, including morbidity and mortality rates.
At Stony Brook, she leads an interventional pain clinic that provides specialized care in response to the opioid epidemic. In addition to her clinical work, Desai has a robust research background.
She has collaborated with Brookhaven National Lab and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. Her expertise is recognized nationally, as she serves on multiple medical committees and writes questions for the national board exam in pain management.
Desai’s selection for the 40 Under Forty awards places her among other distinguished alumni, acknowledged for their contributions to society and their professions.
