Stop AAPI Hate launches campaign to counter Trump’s immigration policies

The campaign seeks to unite communities against mass deportation, confront racial profiling, support family-based immigration, and defend birthright citizenship.

Advocacy non-profit Stop AAPI Hate has launched a new campaign aimed at countering the Trump administration’s immigration policies, which the organization says fuel anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate and discrimination.

The ‘Many Roots, One Home’ campaign seeks to unite communities against mass deportation, confront racial profiling, support family-based immigration, and defend birthright citizenship.

As part of the campaign, Stop AAPI Hate plans to engage lawmakers at the state and federal levels to oppose policies that it says target immigrant communities, including the administration’s efforts to challenge birthright citizenship and expand deportations.

Manjusha Kulkarni, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate and executive director of AAPI Equity Alliance, highlighted that anti-immigrant hate and anti-Asian racism are deeply connected. “From the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Asiatic Barred Zone Act in 1917, to Japanese American incarceration during WWII and Trump’s Muslim Ban in 2017, history has shown us that when AAPI immigrants are demonized by our government, the harm extends to all those in our community regardless of immigration or citizenship status,” she said.

The organization will also work to combat what it describes as a surge in racist legislation that scapegoats Asians under the pretext of national security, such as travel bans and land ownership restrictions. In addition to policy advocacy, the campaign will focus on data collection and research, including polling to assess how anti-immigrant rhetoric affects AAPI communities and analyzing trends in reported hate incidents.

Education and storytelling will play a key role in the initiative. The organization intends to produce digital content highlighting the history of xenophobia and its ongoing impact. First-hand accounts of racism and discrimination will be shared to illustrate the consequences of anti-immigrant policies.

The campaign will also focus on community mobilization, encouraging supporters to contact elected officials, participate in rallies, and attend advocacy events. Upcoming actions include protests in Austin, Texas, and Sacramento, California, as well as monthly virtual town halls on immigration issues.

Cynthia Choi, co-founder of Stop AAPI Hate and Co-Executive Director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, described the campaign as a response to escalating anti-immigrant rhetoric and policies. “Trump, his far-right loyalists, and his billionaire backers like Elon Musk are wasting no time dehumanizing and scapegoating immigrants, who are simply seeking safety and security in America,” she said. “The future of our nation is at a critical juncture, with millions of lives on the line.”

Stop AAPI Hate, which was formed in 2020, has documented thousands of incidents of anti-AAPI hate and continues to advocate for policies that protect AAPI communities.
