Saint Louis University's Fusz Hall has welcomed a new culinary delight this semester with the opening of Spice Market, an Indian restaurant created to offer authentic Indian cuisine to students. The idea for the restaurant originated with a student intern who wanted to improve the standard of Indian food available to students.

Shreya Akula, now the manager of Spice Market, believed that the dishes could be more authentic and flavorful. Her initiative led to a collaboration between student chefs and the DineSLU team, resulting in a highly successful pop-up restaurant serving Indian dishes.

The initial pop-up, held in the Grand Dining Hall, drew an enthusiastic response from students, leading to its establishment as a regular Friday pop-up. “People from diverse backgrounds showed up and liked it,” Akula noted. “Students were flocking to savour the flavours of India.”

Encouraged by the pop-up's success, the Spice Market team explored the possibility of creating a permanent Indian restaurant on campus.

The restaurant, which officially opened on 22 August, offers an array of Indian dishes, including favourites like chicken curry, naan bread, chicken kebabs, and mango lassi. The restaurant is open on weekdays, making it a convenient dining option for students and staff.

Akula sees Spice Market as more than just a dining establishment; it's a place where people from various backgrounds can come together through the universal language of food. “The essence of Spice Market is not only to be a dining establishment but to bridge cultures,” she emphasized. “Food is a universal language, and it brings together people from all over.”
