Scores of students held a candlelight vigil at University of California in Berkeley on Apr. 23 to mourn the 26 lives lost in the terrorist attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Apr. 22. The vigil was organized by Hindu Yuva USA and CoHNA’s youth advocacy network.

The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), in a social media post, said the religiously motivated attack saw innocent men being deliberately killed after their Hindu identity had been confirmed. It shared that the vigil provided a space for young Kashmiri Hindu American students at Berkeley and recent alumni to share the pain they were feeling, especially in light of the ongoing trauma they deal with given the decades of displacement and ethnic cleansing their community has faced.

“We salute these brave kids and the Berkeley Chapters of CoHNA Youth Action Network (CYAN) and Hindu Yuva for this moving event that came together spontaneously within hours of news of the incident.”

The Hindu Yuva USA strongly condemned the brutal terrorist attack in J&K’s Pahalgam. In a statement, it said the senseless act of terror, based on a narrow and divisive agenda, only serves to deepen the wounds of conflict and fear in the region. “We stand with the Hindu student community at large during this deeply disturbing time and we stand in solidarity with the victims and their families in this time of sorrow and mourning.”

The group added that the tragic events of Pahalgam are a reminder of the urgent need for peace, cooperation, and lasting solutions to prevent further bloodshed and suffering.
