Sumit Jamuar appointed Chair of Rainforest Partnership

Jamuar’s appointment was announced on the occasion of World Rainforest Day on June 22, 2023.

British-Indian biotech pioneer Sumit Jamuar was appointed the chairman of the US-based climate action non-profit Rainforest Partnership. He assumed the position on January 5, 2024.

His appointment was announced on June 22, 2023, coinciding with the occasion of World Rainforest Day. Jamuar has been the vice chair and board member of the initiative since December 2022.

An IIT Delhi alumnus, Jamuar graduated in 1999 with a B Tech degree. He is the co-founder of Global Gene Corp and also served as its chairman and CEO from July 2012 to May 2022.

He also worked in the banking industry, with roles at the Lloyds Banking Group and the State Bank of India’s subsidiary SBICAP (UK). Additionally, he served in various positions including chairman, CEO, board member, advisory board, managing director, and on committees of various enterprises.

“I look forward to working together with the Rainforest Partnership team to preserve this wonderful gift for our future generations,” Jamuar’s statement read in part.

Niyanta Spelman, founder-CEO of Rainforest Partnership, said Jamuar’s “clarity of purpose, quiet thoughtfulness, and brilliance coupled with empathy are refreshing and I look forward to working with him in shaping the future on this critical agenda."

Founded in 2007, the Rainforest Partnership addresses the challenge of deforestation by focusing on the needs and rights of the indigenous and local communities on the frontlines of rainforest protection.

The partnership has dedicated teams in Texas, Peru, Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia amongst other places. These teams work toward a common goal of fulfilling RP’s mission to protect tropical rainforests.

In 2020, the RP launched Gen Z for the Trees, a youth-oriented and youth-led initiative with a mission to engage them in rainforest protection and shift the narrative on climate change from despair to optimism and action.

The following year, the partnership organized Rainforest Collective by bringing together rainforest-focused and forest-supporting organizations, communities, leaders, and industries in a global collaboration for urgent action toward rainforest protection.
