Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal defeated Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik during the first round of the Australian Open 2024 men's singles event at Melbourne Park. The win was a historic victory, breaking a 35-year-old record.

The Indian won in straight sets and marked his maiden entry into the second round of the Australian Open. He became the first Indian player since 1989 to best a seeded opponent in a Grand Slam.

Nagal, ranked 137th in the world, won against his 27th-seeded counterpart in a game that lasted for 2 hours and 38 minutes. In doing so, he broke the decades-old record set by Ramesh Krishnan in 1989.

Moreover, Nagal also became the first Indian to reach the second round of the Australian Open since Somdev Devvarman in 2013.

Assisted by a couple of double faults from Bublik, Nagal secured an early lead. He continued his dominance in the second set, finally securing a win in the third set after an intense tie-breaker.

Nagal will play against China's Shang Juncheng, ranked 140th, in the second round of the Australian Open.
